Nethack (Best video game ever.)
freeciv
Minecraft (Through offline mode.)
Dwarf Fortress
Pathfinder (Not a video game, but it's a open-content alternative to d&d 3.5 and it's rules are free as long as you have all the supplies.)

I mostly play free games any way as I'm a cheapskate, so I have a lot to contribute.

Maybe we can consider that when someone here actually hosts a deathmatch server. My vote is on QW though. Despite all the shiny deathmatch shooter games out their with their fancy movement and graphics, which are nice of course, nothing beats plain old quake.
