Great DRM Protection
« on: December 08, 2011, 12:04:47 AM »
Small | Large

If Serious Sam 3 detects that you've pirated the game, it spawns an invincible scorpion that will hunt you down.

ARMA 2 ON DRUGS Small | Large

ARMA 2...well watch the video.  That effect gets worse and worse as you play and will eventually become unplayable in its DRM.

Crysis Warhead Chicken Bullets Small | Large

Crysis 2 replaces all your ammunition and grenades with, well, what better than live chickens.

EarthBound Anti-Piracy Measure (spoilers!) Small | Large

Earthbound probably has the cruelest yet.  It has three layers of piracy.  The first is just a screen easily gotten past that just says copying games is illegal, then its pretty much the same later in the game.  Then, when you get to the final boss of Gygas, the game will freeze and delete your saves.  Probably the cruelest here, allowing you to play the game and losing it all in the end.

Dark Souls made the game entirely unplayable because they send dark phantoms which don't normally spawn in the game unless you "pirate" or play before release.  They are level 145 with pretty much maximum everything.  They are sent out to hunt you.  The screenshot is a dark phantom.

This one is definitely my favorite if you get a pirated Worms 2d, it will play this short animation.  Well, just click the link.

That's awesome! xD That kind of reminds me of a company that gave you a little pirate suit if you pirated the game.

It's like they want people to pirate the game.

Honestly you're giving into that "piracy is stealing!!1one" bullcrap? Piracy isn't stealing, stealing is when remove the original product, piracy is actually a lot like cloning it then taking it.

No one actually makes money from sales expect indie groups and publishers, and some music artists and game developers who have released their games/music through some third party publisher have admitted this, have you ever noticed how a lot of music artists have had a "don't care" attitude towards piracy. You are not scum if you pirate something, you are actually doing good making sure information stays free. (as it should be)

Here is a another wonderful point made on the xkcd webcomic.

No, I do not believe Piracy is stealing. Piracy is a Breach of Copyright material. Say you were to clone money from a bank and use that to pay for stuff with said fake money, that is effectively piracy. Or you went into a film at the cinema without a ticket, and saying "I wasn't going to buy a ticket to this anyway" that is effectively piracy.

Just because you want something, doesn't give you the right to play it.

Also, your whole "Musicians don't care" attitude is bullcrap. Look how many artists sued Napster when they found Napster had uploaded their own songs without permission onto said Website. Napster was shut down.
I'm a musician, and whilst I do love seeing people at my live shows, I still need to make a living (Yeah, bands in my area don't get money for playing gigs) from selling CDs. I probably make a 50p profit from it (We have to split the money between the band), but it's a living.

You know the people that make Serious Sam are an Indie group right?

Musicians profit from piracy, it's free advertising, just like uploading a lets play of a game is free advertising, but no we can't have that, because the damn government is now trying to shutdown that. Pirates actually are the ones that are willing to give money to good artists, they hear the songs, they like it and they go out and buy it. A lot of people realize that and have used that as a business model, you wouldn't believe how much money artists/authors/developers have made from putting their own songs/games/books for free on the Internet. (sounds weird, but it works)

There is also drm to consider, look, I will be willing to give some money to game/music/book/etc companies and buy their stuff if they would be willing to pull their own head out of their ass and learn that drm and other restrictions don't work.

I find it very rare that a pirate would buy something after pirating it. If you already have something, why do you need another copy? Unless they want a hard copy or vinyl. I find it stupid that you are comparing let's plays with the actual music. Let's plays are watching someone's reaction to a game, you don't play the game yourself. Let's plays are more like watching someone talking about a song, whilst said song is playing in the background. Your comparison is flawed and irrelevant.

There is also drm to consider, look, I will be willing to give some money to game/music/book/etc companies and buy their stuff if they would be willing to pull their own head out of their ass and learn that drm and other restrictions don't work.
I agree, DRM is a flaw. But DRM is a service problem, like Piracy. That's why if you buy a game on Steam, when you change computer or update your system, you keep said games. It is a feature I feel should be applied to music libraries like iTunes. You're also in this quote, punishing the developer for the retailer's problems. It's like yelling at a band because HMV's customer service is bad.
